COOLHUNT – Food crawling on your walls and coming out of your printer.

If we look at sustainable cities, food is also a very important aspect. There’s a lot of hunger in this world and we are asking ourselves the question: how can we feed 9 billion people by the time of 2050? We need smart solutions. We’re running out of soil and materials. Urban farming is becoming a trend but how are we going to implement this in the daily life of everybody?

WHAT? According to farm online we need vertical greenhouse ‘farms’ and city roof-top gardens. They could bring new green life, food, birds and biodiversity. Waste and water would be recycled to grow other things. They’re calling it urban horticulture. With the right investment this culture could supply half of the world’s food by 2050. (Picture 1) On inspirationgreen.com they’re giving a lot of examples of vertical farming on buildings. I think it’s not only useful but it also looks amazing! How awesome would it be to see these kinds of buildings in the future? It’s not only good for our health but we can feed a lot of people with it. We will all become our own farmers. (Picture 2) Then we have a whole other level of food in the future, 3D printing. On 3Dprintingindustry.com they show a lot of ways to print our food. Maybe we will all have a 3D printer in the future to print not only our food but also everything. We don’t have to go to the supermarkets anymore.(Picture 3)

WHY? Urban farming is not new, but to implement it in our daily life is a whole other level. These signals are the ones that can take it to the next level. The ideas are great and I think it is something that we will see in the future because we need these kind of smart solutions. It has something to do with durability, technology. It will increase our social, material and mental wellbeing because we have to work together to make sure that everybody on this planet gets to eat. And these initiatives are a great step towards the future.

COOLHUNT – The walk of the future.

I’ve already talked about transport in the future, but there are also other road users like pedestrians and cyclists. In the cluster transport there was a link to pedestrians and cyclists because in future cities there’s a vision of more of them and less cars and other vehicles. Maybe we don’t have cars anymore in the future. These signals are a step to the future.

WHAT? For example the vision of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) for the future of urban mobility. They’ve created a concept, which is called the “Urban Future”. This installation is made of a 185 meter square section of roads that is digitally programmed with LED surfaces that uses 3D cameras to sense any movements. (Picture 1) Another example is an idea for a road in the heart of Hong Kong’s business district. The idea is to transform the road into a bus-free zone so that pedestrians can breathe cleaner air. The road will be closed to all vehicles except for necessary transport. (Picture 2) The last example is something that cooperates with driver assistance systems in cars. It tells you were pedestrians and cyclists are even while they are hidden from view. Cellphones could serve as transponders and cars will react with an emergency braking sequence. (Picture 3)

WHY? All these ideas are a good example of durability and a vision at the future sustainable cities. I think it’s important that we give a little more attention to a greener environment and more safety. In this case technology is also a big player. These ideas are from last year and I don’t know if they’re actually executed but they have a lot of potential because there’s a lot of pollution in the cities and if we can bring down the number of cars and increase the use of cycles it would be great. People will get more motion and it’s better for the people and the city. How amazing is that. There’s a need to more fresh air in the city and people are looking for a way to implement human movement in their daily life. I think it’s a great combination that will increase the physical and mental wellbeing of people.

COOLHUNT – Sports with a new edge.

Sport plays an increasingly important role in people’s lives these days. We can call it the ‘fit generation’ in which giving attention to your body and health is very important. But with the advent of technology sport can be manipulated or they can be made easier. Let’s take a look at the future of sport.

WHAT? For example the vision of photographer Tim Tadder and digital artist Mike Campau on ‘The Future of Sports’. They made series of athletes placed into new scenes in which they can drive faster and swing harder. (Picture 1)
Lacoste is also very busy with the future of sport. Like an interactive polo they created to play tennis and keep the scores on your polo. On the website www.lacoste-future.com you can find a lot of their ideas. Also a vision on how tennis would look in 5 years. They’ve made a video with their forecasts. It’s a whole lot of technology like a suit in which you can hit harder. And an interactive field that reacts to the ball. (Picture 2)

WHY? I think this is cool because these things are visions of how sport can look in the future. This could be very close to reality. But in the end if we use a lot of technology then why do we call it sport? Because if technology gets the upper hand then we will all become lazy. So things like the interactive polo are amazing because there’s no cheating involved. And playing with interactive fields is very durable for sustainable cities because you can play it everywhere without building a new sport field. Digitalization is very important for sport in the future and it has a lot of future growth potential because it increases the physical wellbeing of people. The quantified self is also involved because we can monitor our own performances.
